Culturally, importing foreign films and TV programs can be very beneficial, but I believe a country should attach greater importance to developing its own entertainment industry.

The exposure to foreign movies and TV programs will certainly help broaden our vision and produce two favorable results. From foreign movies and TV programs, we can learn a lot about customs and lifestyles of other countries, which provides uswith excellent opportunities to reflect upon our own culture and prompts us to improve it. Meanwhile, foreign movies and TV programs can help boost the local entertainment industry by showing new possibilities in the field. One good example is a TV program called “Voice of Holland” which was originally shown in Holland, quickly re-adapted and became popular all over the world.

For all the benefits of imported movies and TV programs, we should alwaysprioritize the development of our own. At the most basic level, as entertainment is a huge market which can create thousands and millions of jobs and generate tremendous profits, it would be a great shame to give up this industry to other countries. More importantly, far from merely means of entertainment, movies and TV programs are also carriers of thoughts and ideas, so it may result in somedevastating consequences if people, especially young people, depend too much on movies and TV programs from other countries for their entertainment. Many youngsters in China, for example, no longer celebrate traditional Chinese festivals as they grow up watching too many movies produced by Hollywood. In this sense, developing the local entertainment industry is significant not only economically but also culturally.

To sum up, while we should certainly import foreign movies and TV programs, theultimate reason for the importation is that it can help us to produce better movies and TV programs of our own.
