What kinds of rules do children need to follow at home in your country?

In my country, children are expected to follow various rules at home, such as having limited screen time, observing a night-time curfew, not having snacks at night, sharing household chores, and more. For instance, many parents limit their children's time on digital devices such as TVs, tablets, smartphones, and game consoles, often 2 or 3 hours a day. This is because children, especially younger ones, usually lack self-discipline, and can end up using these devices for extended periods, which could harm their eyesight, disrupt their homework, and reduce their participation in outdoor activities. Hence, many parents establish these rules to ensure their children maintain a healthy balance between screen time and other activities.

observe a night-time curfew

set a limit on 限制

What kinds of rules do people need to follow when using public transportation?

From my experience, there are various rules that passengers need to follow when using public transportation, such as buses, subways, planes and trains. A common rule is queuing up and waiting for passengers to exit before boarding. This is particularly important with buses and subways, two hugely popular ways for urban commuters. You know, during rush hour, people are packed like sardines, and each stop is crowded with passengers eager to get on. If everyone is pushing and jostling, it’s difficult for anyone to get off or get on. Plus, it’s very likely to cause a stampede.

Additionally, people who take a flight need to obey rules concerning items not allowed. Anyone who violates these rules will place other people on the same flight in danger. For example, most recently, a flight was forced to make an emergency landing because a passenger’s power bank exploded while his iPad was being charged.

queue up 排队

commuter 通勤者

be eager to do 迫切地想做

make an emergency landing  迫降

Why do people break rules or laws?

I think it’s a very general question. If we’re talking about children misbehaving or breaking rules at school, one reason could be that they are seeking attention. In fact, this view is supported by research and reports - low-achieving students may feel ignored and less important than high-achievers because the latter receives more praise and rewards from teachers. As a result, they tend to break school rules, such as being deliberately late for school, to get teachers to have a conversation with them or something. Another reason is that schoolchildren are tempted to imitate. Today, the constant exposure to aggressive behaviour on TV and social media makes them feel that such conduct is cool and bold. In TV series, those who disobey rules are often portrayed as popular, which can create an illusion that breaking rules is necessary to be popular at school.

receive more praise and rewards

be portrayed as 被呈现为
