有关Food & Technology的问题,虽然在具体的问法上有些许差异,但基本我们可以从technology对food的积极和消极影响两个大方面入手。需注意的是,因为是part3的题目,大家要尽可能去延伸自己的观点,而不是非常笼统地说technology让我们可以吃到更多种的食物或是technology导致我们的食物不那么健康。
说到科技对食物的积极影响,可能大家体会最深的便是某些特定季节的蔬菜水果如今一年四季都可以买到、吃到。除此之外,越来越发达的保鲜技术,不仅延长了食物的可食用期限,也让人们能够品尝到从千里之外运送来的异域食物。

E.g. Better cold chain technology, including high-pressure processing, freeze drying, and insulated containers, has allowed people to enjoy exotic foods. Kiwi fruits from New Zealand travel long distances to arrive at the local shelf, but their taste, appearance, texture and nutritional value aren’t spoilt at all. Similarly, dairy products like cheese and butter are still fresh after week-long shipping from Swiss or Norway.

除了上面提到的食物保鲜和应季食物外,技术的进步还让粮食产量得以保证。一些恶劣的天气条件、异常气候或是害虫灾害,会破坏农作物,从而导致粮食产量骤减。但不管是温室栽培、垂直农业,都有效地弥补了这一点。而杂交技术的出现和广泛应用,也让我们得到了一些新品种。

E.g. In the old days, what people ate or whether people had enough food to eat was mainly subject to weather conditions. Natural disasters like heavy rain, floods and drought could result in inadequate food production. A plague of locusts could cause crop failure, leaving millions of people starving. But today, advanced farming techniques such as greenhouse farming have made crops more resilient to increasingly changeable climates, thus, helping achieve stable yields.

我们梳理了关于technology对food的积极影响,接着来看看,科技发展及应用对我们所食用的各类食物的消极影响。
如今,许多食物,尤其是加工食品、方便食品,食物添加剂、色素的使用都十分普遍,但这些添加剂或色素虽然是可食用的,不少研究都表明它们是存在致病致癌风险的。农民为了增加粮食产量,减少害虫对庄稼的破坏,可能会大量使用农药,给牲畜使用激素等,而这些药物残留危害人们的健康。再者,我们现再也有越来越多的报道,某些生产商为了削减成本,使用人造食物(如肉、蛋白、纤维)冒充真正的肉类、蛋白或是利用某些添加剂、溶液将便宜的猪肉、猪血冒充牛肉或鸭血等。

E.g. Livestock farmers sometimes use growth hormones to make cattle, pigs, and goats grow quickly. By doing this, they can reap profits faster, but at the cost of health risks to consumers. In poultry farming, a similar practice is used.
E.g. People are increasingly seeking reduced-fat, low-calorie, sugar-free foods and drinks. Because of this, manufacturers often add artificial sweeteners to their products. However, artificial sweeteners, like Aspartame[阿斯巴甜], can increase diabetes and obesity risks. There is also scientific evidence that these sweeteners may cause migraines[偏头痛] and digestive problems[消化问题].
E.g. Foods we consume today contain preservatives, additives, and colouring. These chemical substances are added to make foods taste better and extend their shelf life. However, the nutritional value of these foods is lessened.
E.g. Modern technology in the food industry makes it possible for manufacturers to produce fake food. Let me give you an example. Due to the high cost of beef, some producers sell pork as beef. What they do is dip it in some solution[溶液]. An hour later or so, the pork looks pretty like and smells like fresh beef. Another case in point is honey. Some producers simply mix sugar, water, alum[明矾] and colouring to make fake honey, but they sell it as real honey. Similarly, quite a few factories sell fake Tofu, a mixture of various cheap chemicals.
