It’s not hard to imagine that neat and legible handwriting would impress the examiner more than a poor handwritten paper does. And probably when you borrow your friend’s notes, you may not want to bother to identify the words one by one as the handwriting is just too terrible.

Generally speaking, most people rarely write with a pen once they leave school. Typing is inarguably more useful than handwriting. It’s reasonable as smart devices including computers, tablets and smartphones allow them to make more words per minute and auto spelling check makes typing even more ideal. It’s fair to say that their keyboarding skills are superior. They jot things down on the memo, they type essays or reports without looking at the keyboards.

As young people today are more and more computer-literate, a funny thing is that if you boast beautiful handwriting and post your handwritten pieces on social networking, you’re bound to receive loads of likes and you’re likely to be the envy of many. But back in the old days, clear and good handwriting was a kind skill that everyone should have.

当然，导致手写方式在工作生活逐渐“隐退”，很大程度源于手写稿和电子稿保存方式的差异。手写，意味着内容写在纸上，如果不小心，打翻水杯，浸湿了笔记，那就太悲哀了。而打字，你可以选择直接存在电脑上，也可以将文件上传至云端保存以防电脑出问题文件丢失。另外，在工作的场合，大家的字体、书写笔迹都不太相同，有的人的字迹很难辨认，如果是手写的资料文件，可能还会导致某些错误，但如果是打印的话，就不存在无法辨认字迹的问题了。

Undoubtedly, what has made handwriting less and less necessary is the way handwritten work is stored/saved. You know, when you write things down, say on a piece of paper or a notebook, and all of sudden, you knock your cup off, so milk, coffee or juice spills all over it. The notes you have written are all drenched and smeared. What a bummer! But if you type on your laptop or something, you can either store them electronically or upload them to the cloud in case your laptop goes wrong.

In the workplace, illegible handwritten materials and reports could make it difficult to read, causing some misinterpretation and errors, but printed versions could avoid this problem.

Even though typing on keyboards and screens dominates written communication in the digital age, handwriting is not redundant. People still need to command handwriting. You know, you can’t avoid signing your names if you’re buying some kind of insurance and applying for a bank loan or something. Besides, it has become a fashion to send others a postcard when travelling. And it’s widely considered that the handwritten postcard delivers more sentimental values and thus is more meaningful. In situations like mind mapping and brainstorm, writing by hand better enables them to collect and organise thoughts.
