talent, “天赋，才能”，也可作“人才”。但是这个词在使用时，有不少小伙伴时会出错的。注意，talent在表示“天赋”时，既可是可数名词，也可是不可数名词，所以在形容或描述某人“天赋”时，可以说show a talent for sth., a hidden talent for sth., have a lot of talent, with a natural talent for sth.或者a man of many talents。

但是在指“人才，天才”（具备某种天赋或技能的人）时，这个词只能作不可数名词。其实大家参考下成语人才济济便能知道，天下人才、天赋异禀的人实则数不胜数。

除了用talent表达“天赋”外，我们还可以用aptitude, knack, gift相关的短语，比如：

have an/a (natural/special) aptitude for sth. 拥有/表现出（天生的/特殊的天资）

have a knack for sth. 有……的才能

have/possess amazing/outstanding gifts for … 在某方面有惊人的/突出的禀赋

a gifted child 有天赋的小孩

At a very young age, I didn’t show any aptitude for singing and dancing, but when I grew up, strangely, I seem to have a knack for such things.

He’s a brilliant boy, with a rare gift for persuading people.

She was a gifted child, but unfortunately, her parents didn’t cultivate her talents to the full.

另外我们也可以用与“擅长”相关的表达来讨论这个话题，比如：

My grandma is adept at growing roses and lilies. [be adept at 在某方面很内行，擅于……]

Needless to say, this young man is an adept in negotiation. [an adept at/in 是某方面的行家]

I would say I’m a dab hand at cooking traditional Chinese cuisine. [a dab hand at 是某方的能手、行家]

Well, I guess I showed outstanding gifts for learning foreign languages such as English, French and Thai. Grammar and vocabulary have always come naturally to me; they stick to my mind and stay there. Each time I hear my friends complain about language learning, I can't understand why it's so difficult for them.

Honestly, I’m not sure about it. I don’t think I have a talent for anything. Maybe I’m a dab hand at cooking? My friends say I cook great dishes, and what impresses them most is that I don’t follow any recipes; I cook with imagination!

Was it mastered recently or when you were young?

I guess it started when I was very little. The first time I attended English classes, everything came naturally to me - expressions, grammar, pronunciation, etc. Luckily, my aptitude for language learning has continued into my adult life, which has made learning other languages much easier for me.

I think I just discovered my talent for cooking in recent years. You know, during the pandemic, food delivery was not available, and most restaurants were shut down. As a result, I began to make meals by myself, and surprisingly, I excel at it!

Well, I would say so. You know, learning foreign languages offers me a window into other cultures. And because I always want to work in an international company, I believe it could be a big plus for me.

Not really. I have no tendency to be a cook in future. But still, it’s a practical talent. I mean, I can make myself a hearty meal using the freshest ingredients. And in the times of the pandemic when we’re under lockdown, I don’t have to worry about eating.

Do you think anyone in your family has the same talent?

Well, not that I’m aware of. I’m certain that I’m the only one in my family who can learn foreign languages with ease. And it actually makes me wonder sometimes - where on earth did I inherit this gift.

Yep, it must be my grandma. She’s the best cook in our family, and stewed steak is her speciality. At our family reunion dinners, her stewed steak is always the first dish to be finished. And on top of that, she’s adept at baking, so we don’t have to buy birthday cakes. She would bake us a delicious one!
