在今天的文章里我们一起来看看当季轮换进来的一个Part 2新题“A book you‘ve read many times”。
To be honest, I’m not a big reader, and I find turning pages somewhat heavy-going, but there’s one book that really tickles my fancy. I’ve probably read it 3 or 4 times.【开头引入。 I want to talk about a book/novel/biography called XXX.】
It’s called Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe - non-fiction, in fact, a travel journal by Bill Bryson, an award-winning writer of many best-sellers. 如果是虚构小说类,可以在这儿增加一句话提及下书的内容即可,比如it’s about a poor family who managed to make a big fortune through years of hard work.】
a travel journal 旅行日志
Actually, I didn't know about Bill Bryson and his works until 3 years ago when we were under lockdown. I was bored to death, tired of binge-watching movies and shows, so I wanted to get something new to kill time. Then, when I was scrolling through social media, I came across a post that highly recommended Bill Bryson’s books. Curiously, I checked for more descriptions and found this book. I'm a keen traveller and always passionate about spending holidays in Europe, so this book seemed right up my street. I downloaded it from the Internet and began idly leafing through the pages.
be bored to death
be tired of doing sth.
binge-watch v.
scroll through 浏览
be passionate about 特别喜欢……
(be) right up one’s street

Well, before finishing the first chapter, I found myself completely hooked. I was much amused by Bryson’s great sense of wit. While reading, strangely, I couldn’t help visualising the scenes, like, during his trip in Oslo, the northernmost town in Europe, the discomfort of the bus made him grumpy and sulky.
great sense of wit 诙谐感
visualise 想象
grumpy 暴躁的
sulky 生气的
Everything in that book seems an eye-opener to me. Can you believe it? In Norway, it’s illegal for a barman to serve you a fresh drink until you have finished the previous one. Hilariously, it’s even illegal in Norway for a bakery to bake bread on a Saturday or Sunday!
It didn’t take me long to finish it. Later on, I may flick through the book at times, and I still chuckle about the colourful stories he narrates. Maybe one day, I will go and explore every nook and cranny of these destinations just like he did. And for sure, if anyone asks me to recommend a book, I’d say ‘Do not miss this one!’【在结尾的部分,也可以直接用最简单的方式:喜欢这本书+推荐给其他人。】
flick through 浏览
explore every nook and cranny
