IELTS SPEAKING
PART 2
Part 2 A time when you gave a speech

One day, I was roaming around the campus, and then, all of a sudden, I noticed a poster on the bulletin board. It was for an English-speaking competition. As a keen English language learner, I felt it was a great opportunity to practice my English. Besides, I was eager to make friends with like-minded people. So, the next day, I went to the administration office and signed up for the competition.

I was still a freshman and wasn’t that familiar with my classmates. I was too withdrawn to mingle with people from different places. Then, one day, our journalism teacher assigned us a group project on the theme of the Belt and Road Initiative. I teamed up with three other classmates. To split the task, we drew straws. What a bummer! I was the one to do a short presentation, and no one wanted to switch roles with me. Though I had always been afraid of public speaking, I had no choice but to accept the task.

I still remember it clearly. It was 100 days before Gaokao, China's college entrance examination—a life-changing exam for many Chinese students. Our high school has long had this tradition of having a pep rally and countdown ceremony in hopes of helping us maintain our momentum. Back then, I was a straight-A student, so I was picked as a student representative to deliver a speech that day.

It took me a long time to memorise the speech, and I strived hard to make myself look natural and confident.
